NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense.
Description
This course includes about six hours of classroom and six hours range time learning basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for skill development.
To be successful in this course, you will need:
- A quality pistol appropriate for defensive use, recommended minimum of 9mm or .38special
- 150 rounds of quality ammunition - see additional details below
- Spare magazines or speed loaders - at least 2 additional (total of 3)
- Eye and hearing protection
Students should expect to shoot between 100 - 150 rounds. Ammunition must be factory-loaded, no handloads. Additionally, Lafayette Gun Club does not permit steel core, steel jacket, armor-piercing, or tracer ammunition. Wolf, TulAmmo, and Brown Bear, Silver Bear, and Golden Bear ammunition are all steel jacketed which is prohibited on LGC's indoor range and therefore prohibited for this course.
Course Prerequisites
NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable federal, state, & local law.
Personal Protection In The Home builds upon fundamental safety and marksmanship learned in introductory courses like NRA Basic Pistol or LGC Fundamental Pistol training. New firearm owners should first attend an NRA Basic Pistol course or LGC Fundamental Pistol Training course and reinforce those skills with regular practice.
To maximize what can be learned from this course, Personal Protection In The Home participants must be experienced shooters, able to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, loading and unloading, shooting a group, and cleaning the firearm. Proof of shooting experience can be one of the following and is required to attend this course:
- Certificate from attending any NRA gun course. (Basic Pistol, First Steps, etc.)
- Certificate from attending LGC Fundamental Pistol Training course.
- NRA or other competitive pistol shooting classification card.
- Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit.
- Military DD-214 with handgun qualification on it.
- Holding or having held any Law enforcement, Corrections, Probation, Private Security, Bail bonds position that required firearms as part of the job
- Successfully completing any defensive pistol course such as Gunsite, Thunder Ranch, etc.
This is not an introductory firearms course and requires experience with safe loading, unloading, and firing of your firearm. Violation of safe firearm handling rules will result in dismissal from the course.
Course Schedule
- Sunday - 2-8pm classroom
- Monday - 4-10pm range exercises
